The battle that united almost all Russian princes’ armed forces in struggle for freedom set an example of spirit triumphing over human passion. Fratricidal strife and fear of the enemy’s power were defeated by love of brothers and valour with hope for God’s help.
The battle, which resulted essentially in the birth of the nation, sealed the special role played in the history of the country by Orthodoxy as the spiritual basis of the great power to be. The Kulikovo battle, which took place on the feast day of the Nativity of the Mother of God, is closely bound up with the names of Dmitry Donskoy and Sergius of Radonezh, ‘Abbot of the Russian Land’, whose prayers accompanied this key battle in the history of the Motherland. In face of the memory of dozens of thousands of warriors who fought under the command of the most Orthodox prince and were killed in action, any attempt to review this role and to deprive Russia of her spiritual pivot appears especially unconvincing.
A new view of the Kulikovo battle, long and ardently proposed by some public organizations, which see an infringement of someone’s rights in the honouring of Dmitry Donskoy’s troops, echoes the attempts of certain European politicians to equalize in rights the war veterans of the Soviet Army with those who fought on the side of Germany. Isolating the commonplace that both Russians and Tartars fought on the opposite sides in the Kulikovo field, it is worthwhile not to forget that for Donskoy’s warriors, unlike the Mamai’s ones, it was a war of liberation.
Hopefully, during the celebrations all the political speculations will give way to a new reflection on the feats performed by our ancestors who realized their kinship in the Kulikovo field - kinship reinforced by the unity of faith, and realized that power lies not in fratricidal strife but in unity, especially if this unity is strengthened by a lofty goal.
